Weekly Reflection
Living with Reverence and Wisdom.
In Ecclesiastes 5–7, Solomon shifts his attention to practical wisdom for daily living, emphasizing reverence for God, contentment, and the value of wisdom gained through life's experiences. He begins with a warning about approaching God carelessly:
“Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Approach to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools” (Ecclesiastes 5:1, NLT).
True worship flows from a humble heart that listens to God rather than merely speaking religious words.
Solomon also addresses the pursuit of wealth, warning that money can never satisfy the human soul. He writes,
“Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness!” (Ecclesiastes 5:10, NLT).
Instead of chasing more possessions, Solomon encourages people to enjoy God's gifts with gratitude, recognizing that contentment comes from Him.
Chapter 6 continues this theme by highlighting the tragedy of possessing great wealth and success without the ability to enjoy them. Solomon reminds readers that fulfillment is not found in abundance but in receiving life as a gift from God.
In chapter 7, Solomon offers a series of wise observations about life's challenges. Surprisingly, he teaches that adversity often produces greater wisdom than comfort.
“Sorrow is better than laughter, for sadness has a refining influence on us” (Ecclesiastes 7:3, NLT).
Difficult experiences can shape character, deepen faith, and teach lessons that prosperity often cannot.
Solomon concludes by encouraging humility before God. Life is not always fair or predictable, and human understanding is limited. Therefore, wisdom is found in trusting God rather than relying solely on our own understanding.
Ecclesiastes 5–7 teaches that a meaningful life is built on reverence for God, contentment with His gifts, humility in the face of life's mysteries, and wisdom gained through both joy and hardship.
