Living Stones Built on the Cornerstone
In 1 Peter 2, Peter reminds believers that following Jesus is more than believing the right things - it is becoming the kind of people God has called us to be. He begins by urging us to remove attitudes that hinder spiritual growth:
"Get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech." (1 Peter 2:1, NLT)
Instead, we are to:
"crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation." (1 Peter 2:2, NLT)
Just as a healthy appetite leads to physical growth, a hunger for God's Word leads to spiritual maturity.
Peter then points us to Jesus, the foundation of our faith. Though rejected by many, Christ is "the living cornerstone of God's Temple" (1 Peter 2:6, NLT). As we place our trust in Him, we too become "living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple" (1 Peter 2:5, NLT). God doesn't simply save us as individuals; He builds us together into a people who reflect His presence in the world.
Our identity is one of the chapter's most powerful themes. Peter declares,
"You are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God's very own possession." (1 Peter 2:9, NLT)
This identity carries a purpose:
"As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light." (1 Peter 2:9, NLT)
We are called to live differently so that our lives point others to Christ.
Finally, Peter reminds us that Jesus is our perfect example when we face hardship.
"He did not retaliate when he was insulted, nor threaten revenge when he suffered. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly." (1 Peter 2:23, NLT)
Through His suffering, "by his wounds you are healed" (1 Peter 2:24, NLT). As we follow in His footsteps, we discover that true strength is found in humility, faithful obedience, and complete trust in God. Built on Christ, the Cornerstone, we can confidently reflect His grace wherever He leads us.
